Evidence-Based Policy in Development Network

Pastoralist Scoping Study

Summary: This report sets out to summarise DFID interventions in pastoralism, across teams, groups and country offices, to advise DFID teams and country offices on trends and problems related to ‘pastoralist development’ issues, particularly those issues where DFID has scope for constructive intervention. It also relates to DFID’s current strategy and inputs to the pastoralist sector with those of NGOs and international agencies working with development. Estimating pastoralist populations is difficult, but worldwide estimates run as high as 200 million people, in a wide range of developing countries including several major DFID partners. In general, pastoralists are faced with serious problems of poverty, vulnerability to shocks and political marginality and this report seeks to explore this situation.
