Pastoralist women and minority rights in Eastern Africa and the Horn

Naomi Kipuri, Andrew Ridgewell

Summary: This report addresses the lack of pastoralist women’s representation in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. As pastoralists, they are victims of social, economic and political marginalization, and as women they suffer inequality in accessing resources, social services and participation in decision-making. In order to best address these issues, this report includes testimonies from pastoralist women who describe their own experiences as well as lessons learned from government officials and non-governmental interventions. To conclude, a series of recommendations aimed principally at policy-makers, non-government organizations (NGOs) and pastoralist women are listed at the end.
